'Science of Sam' Video Features WMHS Teacher Mr. Washington

Did you know that the human body is made up of less than 50% human cells? This is a favorite “weird science fact” of Woodland High School’s acclaimed HS science teacher, Samuel Washington, Jr., as shared in a video series created by the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) for Black History Month.

Mr. Washington says that people of color comprise only about two percent of science educators in the United States. “I find myself being in the minority in most places I go,” he said. “I don’t see me a lot so that’s one of the things that drives me, because I’m needed. Not just for my people and my youth, but for all youth.”

He goes on to share that he celebrates a variety of months that recognize the history of different cultures and identities, such as Hispanic Heritage and Women’s History months. And he tells his students that they should be proud of their identities.

Readers may recall that Mr. Washington was also recently honored by The Westchester Alliance of Black School Educators for his contributions to the Greenburgh Central School District and Greenburgh community. We hope you’ll watch the 2-minute video to learn more about Mr. Washington and his work on behalf of GCSD students. NYSUT Video Featuring Mr. Washington
