Woodlands High School Student Honored for Service and Leadership

Greenburgh Central School District is proud to celebrate Woodlands High School student BreAnne Philips, who was recognized for her outstanding service and leadership during the 25th Annual Legacy Youth Awards Luncheon, hosted by the African American Men of Westchester on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Sleepy Hollow Conference Center.

BreAnne was one of eleven high school students honored from across Westchester County and received the Spirit of Love Award, which recognizes young people who engage in acts of service that provide relief, support, and encouragement to others. The award often highlights students whose impact is felt behind the scenes as mentors, tutors, and leaders who help create opportunities for those around them.

As BreAnne accepted her award, a quote displayed during the ceremony read, “Love is the foundation of justice, peace, and lasting change,” reflecting the values and philosophy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the spirit of the recognition. Echoing that message, BreAnne shared, “A dream was spoken into existence today. That dream lives through service, leadership, and action. I accept this award, not only as an ending, but as a charge to serve boldly and lead with love.”

A student leader at Woodlands High School, BreAnne founded the Falconettes Dance Club, using the arts to create a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for self-expression, confidence building, and cultural celebration. Beyond the arts, she volunteers with food and clothing drives, supports senior citizens and elementary students, and takes on student leadership roles within her school community. She is currently organizing a mission project to collect toiletries for Jamaica and food donations for local pantries, demonstrating a commitment to both local and global service.

Greenburgh Central’s Superintendent Dr. Lorenda Chisolm attended the luncheon to celebrate BreAnne’s achievement alongside her family. Dr. Chisolm expressed pride in seeing a Woodlands student recognized. “Community and care for our community, both locally and internationally, seemed to be a theme for the achievements recognized that day.  I am very proud of BreAnne and, as she prepares to graduate, I look forward to the mark she will leave not only on Woodland’s but on the world around her,” said Dr. Chisolm.
